What is

The City's preservation district is designed to preserve natural land from development, create more parks for community usage and to protect rare biological and geological regions.

Preserving open space in and around the City has always been an important priority for the community and the City Council.  In July 2007, City of Santa Clarita property owners voted in favor of the Open Space Preservation District. The special assessment paid by City property owners will give the City a seat at the table to purchase land that could otherwise be developed and put pressure on the City’s precious natural resources.  Additionally, the Open Space Preservation District will greatly assist the City in preserving natural lands, retaining wildlife corridors, and completing the City’s greenbelt buffer.

The City Council is excited and ready to put these funds to use for the first year’s implementation of the Open Space Preservation District. On September 11, 2007 the City Council approved the recruitment timeline and process for the Financial Accountability and Audit Panel. Five City residents will be selected through an open recruitment process to serve on this panel, whose responsibilities will include reviewing and approving the annual work program, reviewing the accounting of the District’s funds, working in conjunction with the City’s independent auditor to ensure funds were spent properly, making determinations as to whether the proposed expenditures are consistent with the District’s criteria and the requirements, and preparing an annual written report for the public.

The City Council thanks you for your support of the Open Space Preservation District and is confident that City residents will enjoy the wealth of benefits to come.
